Bea Breaks Barriers!
Photographs of Florence B. (Smith) Price are limited. I am enormously grateful to my experts and to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville for their unwavering efforts to help me acquire the photographs below, as well as to the New England Conservatory Archives. The images below represent various stages of Bea throughout her life. The earliest verified photograph of Bea available was taken around age sixteen.
(1) This portrait of Florence Beatrice Smith (Price) was possibly taken in 1902 – the year of her high school graduation. (Duke Studio, Little Rock, Arkansas): Courtesy of Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville.
(2) Florence Beatrice Smith with her mother, Florence Irene Gulliver Smith. This is believed to be one of the earliest known photographs of Florence “Bea” Price. Courtesy of Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville.
(3) Little is known about this photograph, but it is believed to have been taken around 1906, the year nineteen-year-old Bea graduated from New England Conservatory, Boston, MA.
Photograph believed to have been given to Professors Kemper Harreld and Rae Linda Brown.
(4) Florence B. Smith graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in three years, instead of four, and was the only student to receive two diplomas. Bea is in the second row, the third person from the right.

(5) In 1910, after the death of her father, twenty-three-year-old Florence B. Smith left Little Rock, AR and accepted a prestigious position as head of the Music Department at Clark University in Atlanta, GA. She is seated in the second row, the first chair on left.
